Pace or speed: what’s the difference?

Pace is the time it takes to cover one kilometre (for example 6'00/km). Speed is the distance covered in one hour (10 km/h). They say the same thing two ways: runners talk in pace, treadmills and speed tests in km/h.

How to convert

  • Speed (km/h) = 60 ÷ pace in minutes. Example: 5'30/km = 5.5 minutes, so 60 ÷ 5.5 = 10.9 km/h.
  • Pace (min/km) = 60 ÷ speed. Example: 12 km/h gives 60 ÷ 12 = 5 minutes, i.e. 5'00/km.
  • Mind the seconds: 5'30 isn’t 5.30 but 5.5 minutes.

Frequently asked questions

What is a typical pace for a beginner runner?

Most beginners run easy runs between 6'30 and 7'30/km (8 to 9 km/h). A good rule: you should be able to talk while running. That’s the pace that builds fitness without wearing you out.

How fast is 6 min/km in km/h?

6'00/km is exactly 10 km/h, about 9'39 per mile. It’s the pace of many easy group runs.

How do I convert a pace per mile to a pace per kilometre?

Divide the pace per mile by 1.609. Example: 9'00/mile ≈ 5'36/km.
